UPCOMING SHOWS

Jan 21Queer Is Where The Heart Is at Samtökin 78, Reykjavík, Iceland
July 27 at Metro Gallery, Baltimore
An art exchange between Iceland and the US that explores the many nuances of queerness with a special interest in how queerness relates to place. As a transitory and ever-evolving identity and social group, roughly defined by what we are not, queers are no strangers to claiming place– making home where the heart is — often in the margins, with fluid definitions, in self-defined categories, relationships, and places. This project includes exhibitions in Reykjavik and Baltimore, an online archive, an exhibition zine, and a compilation music cd.

Come wish bon voyage to Chrissy!

The Degenerettes second studio album, Philosopher Queens, is a lofi pop fuzz anthology with nods to blues, new wave, and early punk. Philosopher Queens combines jangly guitar, super-charged melodic bass, sweet harmonies, old school pop hooks, and Rahne’s literary song style into 11 tiny narrative universes. Like a collection of short stories, the album chronicles the deeds of heroic friends, mad scientists, and philosopher queens. The songs also tribute some of the greatest degenerettes of the 20th century: Gertrude Stein, Amber Hollibaugh, Candy Darling and Baltimore’s first lesbian rockabilly band, The Roc-a-Jets.

Recorded (on tape) and mixed by Rob Girardi at Lord Baltimore and mastered by Steven Berson at Total Sonic Media (Brooklyn, NY).

The CD release party is also a going-away party for bassist Chrissy Howland, who is moving to Europe later this winter. Chrissy joined the band in the summer of 2007, about a month before we set off on a three-week tour and then came right home to record our first record, Bad Girls Go To Hell. We hit the ground running and were off on a fantastic 5-year collaboration which included being part of Riot Acts, a feature-length doc about trans musicians, several collaborations with The Miss America Puppet Show, two records, and countless great shows. Chrissy’s contribution to the Degenerettes sound is beyond measure.

Tonight we toast our collaboration, bid Chrissy bon voyage, and celebrate the new CD with some of our favorite bands and our friends!

NOV 22 - GOLDEN WEST CAFE - 10pm - $6

His band Jeffrey Lewis & The Junkyard also has a schizophrenic existence, ranging between contemplative folk narratives and distortion-fueled garage rock. Live shows incorporate “low budget videos,” Jeff’s large illustrations displayed to accompany certain songs, such as Jeff’s educational multi-part “History of Communism” or flights of fancy like “The Creeping Brain.” In 2001 Jeffrey Lewis signed to Rough Trade Records (The Smiths, The Strokes, Belle & Sebastian, etc) and has since released five albums, in addition to touring the world and performing with Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks, Devendra Banhart, Black Dice, Thurston Moore, The Fall, The Vaselines, Beth Orton, Frank Black, The Fiery Furnaces, Daniel Johnston, Scout Niblett, The Mountain Goats, The Moldy Peaches, Cornershop, The Cribs, Dr. Dog, Kimya Dawson, Adam Green, Akron/Family, Roky Erickson, Au Revoir Simone, Peter Stampfel, and other luminaries.

The album Jeffrey Lewis: 12 Crass Songs, released by Rough Trade in late 2007, is a collection of songs by the legendary anarchist punk band Crass, reworked by Jeffrey into glorious folk, rock, psychedelic, orchestral and electronica productions which dazzle the ear while losing none of the political power of the originals - an album which garnered praise from Crass themselves as well as four stars in Rolling Stone magazine and many other enviable plaudits. The most recent release by Jeffrey Lewis & The Junkyard is 2009’s ‘Em Are I, which was also widely praised; a full-page feature in Mojo Magazine declared it “brilliant… full of wit and musical variations,” while a 9-star review in All Music Guide called ‘Em Are I “not just Lewis’ most consistent album, but also his most truly affecting and easily his most successful outing to date.” Jeffrey has written multiple articles for the New York Times’ “Measure For Measure” songwriting feature, and most recently has been creating a series of historical illustrated songs for the History Channel website. His critical writings on the comic book Watchmen have lead to Jeffrey lecturing on Watchmen around America, Australia, Europe and the UK; Jeffrey’s own comics have been published in collections like “Wobblies!” (a history of the Industrial Workers of the World), “The Beats,” “Jews & American Comics” and others. Jeffrey’s most recent self-published comic book Fuff is an anthology series combining biographical pieces, fiction, and travelogues, and is currently up to issue eight.

8pm MONDAY 24 OCTOBER 2011

The all-girl group, originally formed in a Baltimore basement in 2005, brings together three magnates of Baltimore’s DIY art and music scenes. Influenced by years on the garage rock, soul, roots, and punk rock scenes along with obsessive movie-watching, The Degenerettes’ bass-driven jangly fuzz guitar sounds combine with Rahne Alexander’s literary, often humorous songwriting, creating multiple narrative universes—from torrid mummy love affairs to teenybopper spies to Baltimore streets. They are the soundtrack of the Velvet Underground and the Runaways on a big gay double date at a midnight movie. In addition to performing in rock clubs, warehouses, and galleries on the East Coast, The Degenerettes collaborate with The Miss America Puppet Show, and are among the subjects of Riot Acts, an indie doc on transgender musicians released in 2009.

Part sixties garage rock, part eighties post-punk, Squaaks churns out catchy rock that recalls Warhol contemporaries T. Rex, The Kinks, and maybe some Beatles for good measure.

Brinson Renda is a video / installation artist, painter, illustrator, editor and curator who is driven by an incredible passion for self-expression through art. Her works are often noted for their deviant style, awkwardness and sarcasm. Brinson utilizes a variety of styles that blends glitchy - choppy video & often found objects to convey the ideology behind her aesthetic. She is currently the Editor of Art Cards (Miami), and has recently moved to Baltimore, MD to pursue a residency at the Creative Alliance. In October, she co-curated The Drift, a multi-casted & meta-physical project based on Guy Debord’s theory of the Dérive, co-located in Tampa, Columbia SC and in Baltimore at The Hexagon.

Formed in Brooklyn in 2008, Near East Family makes collaborative works that explore the intersection of sonic, visual, literary, performing and media arts to create performances, recordings, video, installation and hybrid forms. NEF emerged out of David and Tara Gladdens’ collaborative art practice and is a moniker for projects that often include other artists as extended “family members.”

Photo

Oct 14: The Drift Project with The Degenerettes, Ketman and...

Oct 14: The Drift Project
with The Degenerettes, Ketman and IED-IUD at The Hexagon

Friday, October 29 - The 6th Annual Bruisers Ball The Charm City...

Friday, October 29 - The 6th Annual Bruisers Ball
The Charm City Rollergirls’ Supervillain Soiree!
